Ft Myers Salvation Army Finds Gold Coins In Red Kettles

Ft Myers Salvation Army bell ringers have "struck gold" 3 separate times this year. On Tuesday a gold Krugerrand worth approximately $1500 in 2 separate kettles, 1 in front of the Publix at Colonial Blvd. and and Summerlin Rd. in Ft Myers, and the other at the Publix at College Pkwy. and South Pointe Blvd in South Ft Myers. Both coins were wrapped in a note with a verse from the Bible regarding the importance of charity and giving. The handwriting on each of these notes seemed to match the handwriting on a similarly themed note found with another Krugerrand last week at the Colonial Blvd. Publix.

Ft Myers Charities| Random News And Notes

I am always amazed by the number of groups and individuals in the Ft Myers area that actively support local charities. All around Lee County churches, businesses, civic and networking groups, lodges and schools and countless individuals actively seek out some way they can help the less fortunate. I never go a week without hearing a half a dozen stories about someone going the extra mile to help out.

  • Sweetbay Supermarkets is hosting a "Box Out Hunger" promotion to raise food for The Harry Chapin Food Bank. Sweetbay customer's can purchase a box of food for $10.00 and either deliver it to the charity of their choice or leave it with the store for pick up by the food bank. The box of food will feed a family of 4 for 1 day.
  • Nations Association Charities is asking for donations of turkeys. They currently have over 400 requests for turkeys for Thanksgiving, and only have 85 or so on hand! They can also use donations of canned food, any kind of meat, dry goods, baby items, and money. For more information call (239)332-7575.
  • A group of Ft Myers Weight Watchers has been participating in a program called "The Lose For Good Campaign", as they have shed pounds the members have donated food representative of the weight they have lost. Locally they donated 6,550 pounds of food to The Salvation Army! Nationally Weight Watchers' "Lose For Good" Campaign has raised over $2,000,000 and 3,500,000 lbs. of food.

Charitable events in the Ft Myers/Naples area always get great support from the businesses, citizens and organizations of SW Florida, but there have been few times an event has generated as much excitement as "The Naples Big Event" is creating locally. People are making plans for sharing limo's, reserving hotel rooms, and buying their tickets in advance... and all with a great deal of enthusiasm!

The "Big Event" is a casino night, with one of the main sponsors being The Seminole Casino-Immokalee. The host of the evening will be Chad Oliver, an anchor for the ABC7 Morning News. The volunteers at The Salvation Army were pleased to offer their guests samples of their original recipe doughnut holes and doughnuts. Made with the same recipe used to make doughnuts for the armed forces during World War I, the samples were not only delicious, but, gave one the sense that they were tasting a piece of history! However, this organization has far more to be proud of than just their doughnuts! Both they and the neighbors they serve should be proud of the vast array of services and support they offer to those who need it most including, but not limited to ...

  • free shelter
  • food
  • clothing
  • medical care
  • educational classes
  • vocational assessments

Lee County Students Make A Difference In Their Community

Often times news regarding charities in the Ft Myers area isn't good news. Recent headlines have reported how many of the largest and most visible of our local charitable organizations are struggling through the recession much the same as the citizens they reach out to. Charity fundraisers such as the "Cattle Baron's Ball" which raises money for The American Cancer Society, and The American Heart association's "Heart Ball" are finding it more difficult to get people to attend, and those who attend are donating less. On top of that there is now talk that approximately 400 of Lee County's non profit organizations are facing the possibility of losing their tax exempt status! Troubling news indeed!

At a time when we need it so much what a relief it has been to hear stories of how a number of students in Lee County have gone the extra mile to give something back to their community.

  • Samantha Muller of Ft Myers Beach Elementary crafts socks into "stuffies", sells them for a dollar a piece, and donates all the proceeds to "Pennies for Patients", a cause that raises money to find a cure for cancer!
  • Evangelical Christian School's Varsity Cheerleaders provided 20 meals to residents staying at The Ronald McDonald House, and donated toys to children staying there!
  • Deborah Chaney of Sonshine Christian Academy donated her time to volunteer at the ACT shelter, which gives assistance to victims of domestic violence!
  • Lane Murphy, a 2nd grade student at Alva Elementary School donated $20. he had won at an Easter egg hunt to the American Cancer society's" Relay For Life"!

Kudo's to these thoughtful, inspiring, young members of our community who are making an effort to improve the lives of their SW Florida neighbors! I hope these young people know their efforts aren't going unnoticed or unappreciated!

Facebook Causes Promotes Ft Myers Food Pantry

Among the many uses of social media giant Facebook, I'm a bit surprised to discover Facebook provides at cost, an effective method of raising money and awareness for any federally designated 501c3 charity.

I chose to to promote the local food bank in my back yard. Facebook causes allows you to request your Facebook friends to donate and this part I found most interesting: If your friends don't have the cash flow you can guilt your friends into guilting their Facebook friends.

The more time I spend with fund raising for local Ft Myers charities, I'm finding out if you ask 100 people to donate $5.00 40 will say "yeah sure", less than 2 will follow through.

So if the percentage of people who actually follow through is that low, it stands to reason, if you really intend to raise X amount of money, you're going to have guilt them, with a cattle prod if necessary.

Anything less than a full court press will result in less than effective return.

Therefore I'm resolving to pester all my Facebook friends. If they don't have the spare change, the least they can do is to agree to pester all of their Facebook friends... so they might be able to "save face".

The url to the specific Facebook Causes page is: http://www.causes.com/causes/492503

But For The Grace Of Go I ... You Could Be Next Ft Myers!

IF YOU THINK IT COULDN'T HAPPEN TO YOU, THINK AGAIN.

Suze Orman counsels us to keep 8 months of our current income in the bank as a back up, that is NOT counting what we should be saving, she's talking about our rainy day fund.

If you lost your job TODAY, and it took you 6 months to find a suitable replacement for your current job... do you have 6 months salary in the bank RIGHT NOW?

Damn Few Of You Do

Frederick MD Homeless now off streets

Donate to your favorite charity AND donate some groceries to what ever local foodbank is nearest you, and do it RIGHT NOW.

More than a few of my readers are calling me to find out where they can go to volunteer at the foodbank, well there is more than one foodbank in Frederick Maryland and there is more than one soup kitchen.

I tell everyone to call the City of Frederick's Frederick Community Action Agency if you are wanting to volunteer at a soup kitchen.

I found this interesting provocative post about homelessness on Google and thought it newsworthy enough to repost here.
Credit for this post goes to Frederick Maryland Charities

In Ft myers and all across the country families that have always considered themselves middle class are now facing struggles they never anticipated. With layoffs, reduced hours and wages, these families are fighting to pay their rent, or their mortgages, and having a tough time putting food on the table for their kids! Hundreds of families in Lee County have slipped into homelessness and are turning to our churches and charitable organizations for assistance, and many more are just one misfortune away from finding themselves in the same situation.

Imagine having to tell your child "there is nothing to eat for dinner tonight", and then realize for many in SWFL it's no daydream ... it's their REALITY!

Pick a local food bank or charity and lend your neighbors a helping hand!

  • Make a cash donation!
  • Donate Food! Canned, fresh, or frozen ... local food banks can handle all types of donations.
  • Donate your used plastic grocery bags!
  • Go to the dollar store and buy a can opener to throw in your bag of donated goods! You spend more on cigarettes or Starbucks than a can opener costs! Families that have lost EVERYTHING... have lost their can openers too!
  • Volunteer! Food banks and soup kitchens need people as much as they need material goods!

Fort Myers Food Drive Off To A Good Start

I showed up at 10:00 and the Harry Chapin Food Bank food drive was well under way. I went to the Estero high school drop off and was greeted by an enthusiastic group of Estero High students who had volunteered to help with gathering and sorting the food that was dropped off. When I showed up the donation boxes were half full, which made for a very impressive pile of canned goods and dry food. It was nice to see young people so upbeat and enthused about doing something positive in the Ft Myers| Lee County | SWFL area. Also present and working hard were a half dozen volunteers who regularly help at Harry Chapin, and they were happy to talk about the process involved in getting the food from the drop off point back to their warehouse off of Fowler St. in Fort Myers, and then dispersing it to the people and organizations that need it most. I asked 1 of the volunteers when we might know if they met their goal of 225,000 lbs. of food and he said they would probably make that information public by the middle of the upcoming week.

Ft Myers Girl Scout Troop Gives Back To SWFL Kids

The girls in Girl Scout troop 612 worked hard to earn their cookie money, they didn't mind, they knew the money would fund their activities for the rest of the year. One of the things they wanted to do most was ... "something nice to help other kids!" Very admirable considering GS troop 612 is comprised entirely of Daisies and Brownies ... kids between the ages of 5 and 8 years old! Both parents and troop leaders were very proud of their kids choice for spending a considerable portion of their earnings to help others. The girls are quick to remind us that giving is part of the Girl Scout Promise ...

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law

The girls decided they wanted to go to "Build-A-Bear" and each girl would make a bear for themselves and one that they could give to kids who were in the hospital. The bears they made for themselves were dressed in Girl Scout uniforms just like their's, and the bears they made for the children in the hospital were of their own personal stylings and designs.

I should have realized it decades ago, but I never gave it much thought ... One morning in the early 80's I met a remodeling contractor that I did drywall work for at his home. I was to follow him and his laborer out to a jobsite so I could put in a bid on the project. We were all set to go ... he just needed to feed his dog ... a large St Bernard. His laborer (Mike) and I stood by the door and watched as he struggled for 10 minutes trying to get the 1st can of dog food open, not only could he not get it open ... he'd barely made a dent in it! The can opener blade would flop over to the side as soon as you put enough pressure on it to start cutting the can ... it was unworkable!

After watching his bosses struggles Mike spoke up and said " You've been wrestling with that can for 10 minutes ... give them to me, with the dog bowl, and $10.00 says I'll have both of them open in 10 seconds! " I looked at the contractor and knew what he was thinking ... "this will be the easiest 10 bucks I make all day", and at that point I was in agreement, even with a good can opener 10 seconds wasn't much time.

Mike took the 2 cans of food and laid them on their side on the counter, he put the dog bowl to the left and the can opener to the right, he looked up at us and said "give me a 3 second countdown when you're ready to keep time." I was keeping time so I marked my watch and gave him the count ... as soon as I said "go" he immediately karate chopped (hard) the 2 cans laying on their sides, he picked up one of the cans and bent it back and forth about 4 times while holding it over the bowl, the can popped open and in one violent shake he emptied the contents into the dog dish. Then he picked up the second can and repeated the process. DONE ... and he never touched the can opener! Total elapsed time was 5 seconds! It was the easiest 10 bucks Mike made all day! Needless to say the contractor and I were quite impressed, as he handed Mike the $10.00 bill the contractor asked "where did you learn that neat little trick?"

Ft Myers/SWFL Food Banks Need Can Openers

Mike told us that for the best part of the past 3 years he had been homeless. He said "There isn't too much in this world more frustrating than to finally get your hands on some food, after being hungry for days, go back to your camp and realize you don't have a can opener! Necessity is the mother of invention ... and when your as hungry as I was you can get pretty creative! That dog food can was about the easiest kind of can to open ... the right size to grip, and plenty of side to chop at ... smaller cans aren't nearly so easy, some you have to beat with a rock, and often lose half the contents just getting it open, and bigger cans are tough to get a good grip on." He went on to add "... the toughest part isn't always getting the can open ... it's managing not to cut yourself while you open it and eat out of it. I had it easy in here ... I had a counter, plenty of light, and was warm today ... try that lil trick kneeling in the dirt, in the dark, when it's 30 degrees and your hands are shaking! And then if you happen to get cut that doubles your trouble... things like band aids, peroxide, antiseptic ointment ... even soap and clean water ... can be pretty tough to come by when you live out of a bag, and sleep in the woods!"

I hadn't thought of this story in years until a week or so ago I was talking with a volunteer for a local food bank who mentioned one of the items they can usually use are can openers. She told me even if they had plenty at the soup kitchen, they would know someone who could use them. I checked my kitchen drawer ... we have three of them ... and I can't remember the last time the ones in the back of the drawer got used ... maybe never! The food banks and soup kitchens in the Ft Myers - Lee County area always can use food donations, but, it might be worth calling to ask what other kids of items they can use. You can help out a great cause and perhaps free up a little room in the utensils drawer.

Ft Myers Food Bank Needs Plastic Grocery Bags

Ft Myers Food Bank Needs Plastic Grocery bags

When I showed up at ICSL in South Ft Myers to deliver my "Meals on Wheels" route they were searching frantically for plastic grocery bags. The families that receive food from them are given bags to fill up with food based on the number of people in their household. In desperation they made a call to the South Ft Myers "Publix Supermarket" who gladly donated an entire box of bags ( you would be AMAZED at how much "Publix" does for local charity). In the past I've either returned my bags to the store, or thrown them away when the pile got too big ... it had never occurred to me they might be useful to a local charity. NOW I KNOW ... and so do YOU! Please donate your unneeded grocery bags to ...

Follow Up To " I Made The Call" Post ...

It appears I jumped to all the wrong conclusions! In a previous post I mentioned I'd left my number with one of our local charities and didn't get a call back. It left me guessing perhaps their needs were pretty well covered... well I was wrong! I finally got around to doing what I should have done in the first place ... I contacted them again, and they got back to me the first thing the next morning! Turns out not only do they desperately need volunteers, but, they are also in need of any kind of food donations as well. After a brief but informative conversation all my questions were answered and arrangements had been made for me to volunteer some time working with them. I look forward to posting details of my experience next week.

I Made The Call To Volunteer ... No One Called Back!!!

It's been 10 days since I decided to do something to help put food in the hands of people in Ft Myers who, for one reason or another, weren't getting enough to eat. At the outset I had no idea where to start so I looked online and found the most prominent organization in Lee County. They delivered the most food, won the most acclaim for their outstanding service, had the biggest network and served the most people.

Fort Myers top notch "Hunger Fighters", it seemed reasonable to assume that if they were doing the bulk of the work ... they would have the greatest need for volunteers. So I called their volunteer number, got no answer ( understandable ... it was after business hours ) so I left a brief message, and figured I'd hear from them the next day. Oddly enough, after waiting several days and contacting other organizations, who were in fact interested in my help, it occurred to me that I had never received a return call from the first group I called! I didn't know what to think or feel, but, it certainly raised a few questions ...

Were they so understaffed that they lacked sufficient manpower to field and respond to their phone calls?

Did their answering machine/service somehow lose my message?

Do they currently have enough help, and saved my name and number for future reference?

Did I somehow leave the wrong phone number?

I imagine any of these scenarios is possible ... I can only say that not knowing has finally troubled me enough to want to find out. Up until now I've only mentioned this story to one other person, he is also active in the Ft Myers area food distribution charities, and as I shared my story and frustration with him he mentioned he had heard others tell the same tale! Have any of you had similar experiences ... or heard similar stories? I'll be following up on this as it has now finally piqued my curiosity to the point where I need to know ... I'll let you know what I find out ...

Finding Your "Comfort Zone" In Working With Charities

Several weeks ago I made a conscious decision to move from wanting to do something positive in my community to actually doing something positive in Ft Myers Florida. Among the various acts that could be considered "positive", I couldn't think of anything more positive than volunteering at a local Ft Myers food bank or soup kitchen.

I wanted to find out what organizations provided food bank or soup kitchens in Ft Myers, selected one near me, and reached for the phone to start making calls to see where I might fit in. I discovered that a local food bank in Ft Myers needs volunteers, specifically drivers for the meals on wheels and to pick up food donations.

Before my hand reached the phone a funny thing happened ... I felt uncomfortable ... I felt unsure ... I pulled my hand back away from the phone and went back to thinking about it! I recognized immediately that this was strange behavior, but the fact was calling to volunteer my services to help others was not in my comfort zone. I began analyzing and rationalizing ...

"Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew?"

"Will I be able to fulfill the obligations I commit to?"

"Do they really need MY help ... I can only do a little?"

"Can I handle being witness to the hardships of others, especially when it involves children?"

These and other questions filled my mind and haunted me for several days. I eventually came to realize that the real issue was that I was about to leap into an area that I had no experience in, that I'd had little exposure to, but in spite of my lack of background, wanted to make a contribution that mattered. I saw it as an opportunity to be less than effective ... an opportunity to fail! As soon as I understood this I reached for the phone again, and then pulled it back once more ... I decided I would go and visit the organization in person.

I walked into the food bank unannounced and waited in line for my turn to speak with the lady at the front desk. The others in line were there to pick up food, and while it was obvious they were there because they had need, their spirits were high and their outlook upbeat. As I watched the administrators and volunteers dispensing the food going about their duties it was apparent that they felt good about what they were doing ... the whole room was filled with an air of positivity! Just standing in line watching these people interact with each other allayed 50% of my anxieties regarding volunteering! It was simply people helping people! When my turn came to approach the receptionist I sat down and told her I was interested in volunteering she seemed excited by the idea and called one of the managers from the back to speak with me. We went into her office where she gave me an overview of what the organization was about and what they were trying to achieve, and told me a little about the groups history. What was evident to me was that by virtue of the fact that I wanted to help ... I was already accepted as part of the family! The more we talked the more eager I became to show I was worthy of being part of their organization. I accepted a route on their "Meals on Wheels" program and will begin making deliveries this week, and intend to keep my eyes and ears open to see if there are other ways I can help.

Now looking back on my anxieties with volunteering they seem quite foolish. I imagine it's part of human nature, like your first day of grade school, or asking a girl on a date for the first time. Our minds seem to conjure up visions that are awkward or uncomfortable, when in reality it is a natural thing, just part of growing as a human being. It has occurred to me that there are probably many like myself who have wanted to volunteer, and wanted to do something positive for their communities, but felt awkward getting started. I would suggest that if you can put your fears aside long enough to take those first few steps you will quickly discover, as I did, that helping those in need isn't so far out of YOUR comfort zone at all!

Learning The Ropes Of Local Charity In Ft Myers

I've devoted some time over the past week researching the various types of charitable and social service organizations exist in the Ft Myers area, and have been pleased to find there are many groups that address a diverse array of needs. I have also been surprised to find out that there are, in fact, needs for services that I never knew existed or if I was vaguely aware ... I didn't know the extent of the need. It had never occurred to me that there might be hungry people who, because of their age or lack of transportation, are incapable of going to a food bank or a soup kitchen. Likewise, I'd never considered these same people would find it difficult to get themselves to medical appointments, or even to the pharmacy to pick up their prescriptions. I learned just today that one of the major hurdles for Hispanics in the Ft Myers area is a lack of proficiency in speaking conversational English, which often times translates into difficulty locating an organization that can help them, and furthermore communicating their needs to them. In response to this need one of our local food banks has set up a classroom in the back of their distribution warehouse and devote considerable time to teaching English to those interested in learning.

I've also gotten the impression that while food and cash donations are always important ... the thing most of these organizations need more than anything else is for people to donate their time. Even a few hours a day once a week goes a long way when there are enough people volunteering. Take some time to consider what you can do to help when you have a few spare hours, it will be an eye opening and rewarding experience!

Hungry children in Ft Myers Florida wait out long weekend

Several months ago in the middle of service at church our minister asked a man to come forward and speak. I don't recall the man's name, but, the story he told struck a nerve in me, and is a large part of why I sit here writing this blog today! It's a safe assumption to say " we all " know the recent economic downturn has changed all of our lives here in Lee County, but, after hearing what this man had to say I realized I hadn't yet grasped the extent to which some lives were affected, and the hardships too many are forced to endure.

He shared a story told to him by a friend, who happened to be a principal at a local elementary school. She came to school one particular Monday morning and was greeting the students as they filed in from the buses and the area where parents drop off their kids. Most of the students had made their way to their classrooms, however, a few still lingered in the halls, among these was a group of 3 kids from the same family. What drew her attention was the fact that they were all standing together, holding each other and crying. When she asked them what was wrong their response surprised her ... they were crying because they hadn't eaten since their school lunch on Friday ... and their stomaches were hurting! She immediately took them to the cafeteria and had food served to them. It was at this point when she got another surprise, the children each took some of the food and put it away to take home with them, apparently there was another child at home, not yet old enough to go to school, who hadn't eaten since Friday either. She instructed the cafeteria workers to make sure at the end of the day these kids had food in their backpacks to take home. With their belly's full and their tears dried she sent the kids to class, and went to her office to make some calls.

Her first call was to a friend and associate of hers who was also an elementary school principal, she thought she would surprise her friend with the story, but it turned out this principal was dealing with the same issue with several of her students as well. They decided action needed to be taken ... they started calling schools around the county and telling administrators about the problem, they advised their staff to be on the lookout for any sign in the students that they might be hungry, and to advise them immediately, and they ( the administrators and teachers ) all started bringing food to school so that on Fridays they could fill the kids backpacks with enough food to get them through the weekend!

Since I first heard this story there hasn't been a day I didn't think about it at some point, and it has changed forever the way I look at teachers and school staff! I've kept my eyes and ears open lately when I visit my own daughter's school, and I've seen and heard enough to know that this is going on in my neighborhood as well, this problem is real and ongoing! If there is a time for action ... that time is NOW!

Contact a local food bank, find a church that is feeding the hungry, when someone asks for a canned food donation give as much as you can ... the need has never been greater!

I hope to post links to organizations in our community who can use YOUR help in the very near future.

One person can make a difference!

Yesterday was Mother's Day, we had gone out to eat and returned home for coffee and cake when my mother shared a story with the family that has stayed with me all day today. Mom serves as an usher/greeter, on a rotating basis at her church " The Church of the Cross " on Daniels Rd.. The church itself has a long history of reaching out to the community to help those in need, as well as a long list of members of their congregation who are active in many of our communities charitable organizations. Yesterday, as she was standing at the door welcoming people to the 10:00 service Mom noticed 2 passenger vans of men pull up to the front entry. They were well dressed and friendly, but unfamiliar to her, and she wondered where they all came from.

The service started with the usual songs and prayers, then before the Minister began his sermon he called one of the men from the group that arrived in the vans to come forward. He came to the front, and told the congregation he and his friends were from " Teen Challenge " and they had come to honor and express their gratitude to Dorothy Thomas ( no relation to myself ). Dorothy has, for some time, been relaying the needs of Teen Challenge to the church, bringing food items to the group, collecting and delivering clothing donations, and even went so far this year as to supply Mother's Day cards for those in the program to send to their own mothers. The group wanted to thank her publicly and present her with a certificate of appreciation.

As I heard this story I was struck by how much it must have meant to Dorothy to have these men want to take of their time and resources to come and show their appreciation for her. However, from the time I woke up this morning I haven't been able to stop thinking about how much Dorothy must have meant to Teen Challenge. I'm sure there are a number of people who have given of their time, and provided food or clothes to the group, but Dorothy has done so consistently and joyfully, and has made a real difference at Teen Challenge, in these men, and in her community!

For over a year now I have been hearing stories of how many Ft Myers charities resources are being spread too thin, and that there has never been a greater need locally for everyone to pitch in and help. Perhaps we could all learn something from Dorothy, find a group that can use what we have to offer, give of ourselves regularly and happily, and bring a true sense of community to Lee County.
